Administrative history
The YMCA was established in Guelph in 1895 and was located on Quebec Street. The YWCA was established in Guelph in 1915. It was first located at St. George's Square, but later moved in 1929 to Quebec Street, providing a residence for young women, club rooms and educational facilities.
The two associations merged to form the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph in 1961. In 1965, the Guelph Y had nearly 2,500 members and participants. Due to its growing membership, the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph moved to a new facility located on Speedvale Ave. East in 1968.
As membership continued to grow, a new Y facility was opened on Woodland Glen Drive in July of 1996. In 2000-2001, the Y facility was expanded and renovated to meet the needs of its current and future members.
In 2002, the YMCA-YWCA had more than 8,000 members and is one of the fastest growing Y's in Canada.
