Administrative history
The Yarker-Colebrook Women’s Institute located in Camden East Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, was founded on July 29, 1927 with Mrs. Norman (Josie) Boyce as the first President. This branch was a part of the Addington District Women’s Institute. Fifteen members attended the first meeting. The branch was sometimes referred to as the Colebrook-Yarker Women’s Institute. Yarker-Colebrook branch disbanded on March 18, 1958, likely due to low membership. Some of the members joined the Camden East branch after disbandment. The Yarker-Colebrook branch was highly involved in the two communities. Early in their establishment, the branch raised funds to clean up and maintain the local cemetery. They also paid a local craftsman to make town signs for Yarker and Colebrook. Locally, the branch remembered the sick and needy at Christmas time by sending cards and gifts. They also contributed to their community by canvassing for donations to give to the needy, replenishing the First Aid kits at the school, and helping support the travelling library. The branch was involved with the Centreville Fair and the Denbigh Fair on a few occasions. Some of the “Short Courses” and classes they offered were Modern Dress Making and Cooking. Their most popular fundraising effort by the members was holding a euchre and dance, which was also a popular social event for the community. The branch also co-hosted a play to raise money. Donations were given to Mental Health Association, C.N.I.B., Children’s Aid Society, Children’s Hospital, and the Annie Haggerty Scholarship. The past Women’s Institute Presidents of Yarker-Colebrook were: Mrs. Norman (Josie) Boyce (1927-1930), Mrs. C. (Annie) Amey (1930-1932), Mrs. G. (Vera) MacFarlane (1932-1934), Mrs. E.W. (Edna)Boyce (1934-1936; 1942-1943; 1947-1950), Mrs. F.A. Snider (1936-1938), Mrs. William (Rhoda) Jackson (1938-1940), Mrs. Andrew (Kaye) Warner (1940-1942), Mrs. Wallace (Myrtle) Babcock (1943-1946), Mrs. W. (Dorothy) Valentyne (1946-1947), Mrs. Percy (Helen) Galbraith (1950-1954; 1958-1959), Mrs. V. (Eleanor) Veley (1954-1956), and Mrs. J. (Mary) Hearn (1956-1958).
