The United Copper Nickel Workers (UCNW) fonds consists of three records that document a particular era of the history of the nickel industry in Canada: World War II. More specifically, the Constitution and by-laws of the union attest to the objectives of its members, while the agreement with Inco provides insights on working conditions. The brief submitted by Inco to the National War Labour Board in 1943 also provides information on labour relations during the war.
United Copper Nickel WorkersFonds consists primarily of letters from Roland James Saundercook, a Canadian soldier fighting overseas, home to his immediate family in Collin's Bay, Ontario, dating between 1942 and 1945. Other letters present include from people overseas who had known Roland James Saundercook and wanted to send condolences to his family, and letters from family friends on the same topic dated 1945. Also present is Saundercook's flying log book and other military records, land records and a photograph of the Saundercook home in Collin's Bay, official military correspondence about his disappearance and his parents subsequent attempt to locate him, and a photograph album of early carte-de-visites, unidentified.
Saundercook, R.J. (Roland James)The fonds contains textual documents related to the postal service during the Second World War and afterwards. More specifically, the documents are linked to the postal office in Mead, Ontario, a village located approximately 35 km from Hearst. In addition to some correspondence letters, the fonds contains guidelines on regulating the mail sent to or by the prisoners of war, who worked in labour camps in the region.
Gélinas, GéraldThe fonds contains interviews and other documents relating to the personal experiences of the veterans during WWII. In accordance with each of the veteran's preferences, the employees of the Research Chair recorded the interviews in audio or audiovisual format. Photographs or textual records preserved by the veterans or their families are sometimes added to the interviews.
