    Biographical history

    William Paterson (1839-1914) Minister of Customs for Canada from 1897 to 1911 was born in Hamilton, Upper Canada. His parents, James and Martha Paterson, died of cholera in 1849 and he was adopted by the Reverend Ferrier. He was educated at Hamilton, Canada West and in Haldimand County. He went into business in Brantford manufacturing biscuits in 1863 and that same year married Lucy Davies. He represented South Brant as a liberal in the federal legislature from 1872 to 1896 and then successively represented North Grey, North Wentworth and Brant until 1911

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of personal and political correspondence of William Paterson and includes correspondence of his wife Lucy Paterson and other family members. There are petitions, copies of timber licences, information on the Six Nations Reserve at Brantford, notes for speeches, family photographs and other material.
