Biographical history

William G. Stewart was born in St. Thomas in 1923. He graduated from the local vocational school and, during the Second World War, served as a gunner and wireless operator in a tank.
At the age of 17, he was one of the founders of the Elgin Nature Club in 1941.
He married Eileene Butterwick in 1949 and together they raised two sons, Stephen and Stanley.
During his working career, Bill was a machinist and a toolmaker. He landed a job at the University of Western Ontario's Engineering Department in 1965. From 1968 to 1988, he was employed as an instrument technician in the Astronomy Department at U.W.O.
With Eileene's help, Bill systematically documented the distribution and abundance of the plant and animal life of Elgin County.
They've published dozens of articles in scientific journals and several books on Elgin's natural world. Two especially significant publications are the "Guide to the Flora of Elgin County, Ontario" (1969) and "Mammals of Elgin County, Ontario" (1982).
Bill Stewart died on June 1st, 1997 at the age of 73.
