Biographical history
William Joseph Enscott was born in Pidgeon Hill, 11 Nov 1921. In Feb 1939, the family moved to England. Bill worked as a turner, making large-calibre naval guns and also served as a spotter for the Home Guard to keep production going as long as possible during air raids. In 1941, he joined the RAF as a machinist, took a College of Engineering course at Loughborough, then served at Henlow. In 1942, he transferred to Radar Mechanic (Air), took an electronics course at Leicester Polytechnic, then an intensive radar course at Caine, Wiltshire and at Cosford. He then served at Leighton Buzzard for Bomber Command, responsible for AYF, IFF, GEE, and H2s airborne equipment. In December 1942, he married Cynthia Berridge from Shepshed, Leicestershire, and the pair had five children. Bill became chief engineer for Executone Communications. In 1971, he went into business for himself, making custom cabinets and custom machining. In 1988, Bill and Cynthia returned to Port Hope.
Custodial history
Donated to the Port Hope Archives by M. Lambert, 2015. Donor purchased the items at the William Enscott estate sale, from his daughter. Further accurals may be expected.
Scope and content
Item is a photograph album dedicated to the televised landing of Apollo 11 on the moon, 1969. The photographs were taken by Wm. Enscott of his television screen, featuring the CBS feed of the moon landing, using a pin-hole camera he designed and built. It also contains an image of Wm. Enscott sitting in his living room.
