History
Recommended by his grandfather, William Claus was named deputy superintendent of the Six Nations at Fort George in 1786. He notably defended the Crown in its dispute with Joseph Brant who argued that the Six Nations of the Grand River had the right to sell off portions of their lands as they wished. On September 30, 1800, he was appointed as deputy superintendent general for Upper Canada, he was working in this role when he signed Treaty 13.
