Biographical history
The Watson family originated in Ireland, emigrating to Vaughan Township in 1836 after a short stay in the United States. James Watson, and his son William, purchased the east half of lot 32, concession 7 at this time. The family continued to farm the land in question well into the 1960's, when the property was sold. William Watson was a teacher first at the Bryson School (School Section # 10) and subsequently at the Purpleville School (School Section # 11). "Bob " (Robert William) Watson was the last owner of the subject property.
Custodial history
The materials were created in two groups, one between 1894 and 1939 and likely collected by Jeannie Wilson Watson Schleihauf, although the entire provenance is not apparent. The other is recent genealogical research and an updated family tree created between c.1998 and 2002. The materials were donated by her son, John Douglas Schleihauf of St. Thomas and his family in 2002 and accessioned in 2003.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of records and photographs largely related to the building and occupation of Burnside Farm, the family farm at Lot D, Concession 11, Aldborough Township, Elgin County. It includes a diary of the building of the house at the farm, kept by Jeannie Wilson Watson (later Schleihauf), a photograph album also kept by Mrs. Schleihauf, a disparate group of unbound photographs and genealogical materials created by several family members. The fonds has been arranged into the following series, largely following its divisions at the time of accessioning: 1. Photographs, 1894-1939 2. Burnside Farm, 1901-1903 3. Genealogy, 1935-2002
