Administrative history
The settlement of Port Stanley began in 1812. The geographical location of the village at a river mouth on a lake made the area a logical choice for early settlement in Canada West. In the early part of its' history, Port Stanley was governed by the District of London and the County of Middlesex. Soon after the coming of the London and Port Stanley Railway, the citizens of Port Stanley pressed for incorporation. The fact that half of the village was in Southwold Township and the other half in Yarmouth Township delayed the progress of the village. Port Stanley was set apart from the townships and incorporated in 1874. In 1875 the first reeve, Major John Ellison, was elected. The first Town Hall was built in 1877.
On January 1, 1998, the Village of Port Stanley amalgamated with the Township of Yarmouth and Village of Belmont to form the Municipality of Central Elgin.
