Administrative history
The Toronto Hospital Corporation (TTH), 585 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 2C4, was created by legislation passed in the Ontario Legislature on October 29, 1986, effecting the merger of the Toronto General Hospital (TGH) with the Toronto Western Hospital (TWH), which became, respectively, the Toronto General Division and the Toronto Western Division of The Toronto Hospital.
The initial mission statement of TTH pledged the Hospital “to provide, promote and to advance patient care by fostering excellence in health care delivery, teaching and research.” Bill 172, an Act to Amalgamate The Toronto Hospital and the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital (OCI/PMH) came into effect on January 1, 1998. As of 1998, under the authority of the TTH Corporation’s governing body, the Board of Trustees, TTH was comprised of three semi-autonomous hospitals—the Toronto General Division, the Toronto Western Division, and the OCI/PMH Division. TTH was superseded by University Health Network in April 1999.
The chief administrative body of TTH was the Executive Committee, headed by the President and Chief Executive Officer. The role of President and Chief Executive Officer has been held by W. Vickery Stoughton (1986-1991) and Alan R. Hudson (1991-1999).
At the departmental level TTH administration was organized in six directorates, each headed by a Vice President, under the general authority of the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
The Surgical Directorate, headed by the TTH Surgeon-in-Chief, administered the Department of Surgery, various clinical departments including Anaesthesia, Gynecology, and Ophthalmology, as well as the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and the Neurosciences Priority Program.
The Medical Directorate, under the authority of the TTH Physician-in-Chief, was responsible for managing the Departments of Medicine, Emergency, Psychiatry and Medical Education, and for administering the Princess Margaret Hospital Oncology program and the Transplant Priority Program.
Other Directorates were Patient Services (Nutrition and Food Services, Pharmacy, Psychology, Rehabilitation Services); Finance and Facilities (Capital Planning, Facility Management, Finance, Medical Engineering); Human Resources (Payroll, Occupational Health and Safety, Training and Development, Volunteers); and Community Programs and Strategic Alliances (Family Medicine, Obstetrics, Nursing, Social Work; and the Primary, Ambulatory and Community Care Priority Program).
