      History

Obstetrics/Gynaecology was a program grouping at The Toronto Hospital and included Psychiatry, the Division of Reproductive Biology/Reproductive Biology Unit (TG), the Division of Gynaecological Oncology (TG), and the Divisions of Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine. By January 1989 this program also included a new Fetal Assessment Unit in association with the Ultrasound Department. The Program reported to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. By 1992 the hospital’s reorganized administrative structure meant that Obstetrics/Gynaecology reported to the Vice President Surgical Services. By 1998 this had changed and while Gynecology still reported to the Vice President Surgical Directorate and Surgeon-in-Chief, Obstetrics was now a separate department under the Vice President Community Programs and Strategic Alliances.

When the TGH and TWH merged, the TGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology relocated from Norman Urquhart to 6 Eaton North. Although the obstetrical service at TWH had closed down ca. 1983, removal of the gynaecology service did not occur until May-August 1986. However, while the TTH Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was primarily based at Toronto General, an active presence was still needed at Toronto Western in order to provide patient care. In April 1987 Dr. Jerry Millson was appointed Deputy Chief of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for TWH and headed a clinic at the Med-West building, while Dr. Ronald Livingstone was Deputy Chief of Obstetrics and Head of the Maternal/Fetal Division. Dr. Robert Caspar was Head of the Division of Reproductive Biology (1988).

Dr. E.R. Plunkett (1987-) was the Obstetrician and Gynaecologist-in-Chief.
