This newspaper was founded in 1922 by J. A. Keeler, who had served under the St Lawrence News which has ceased publication at this time. In 1933 the Iroquois Post was purchased by W. E. Crateau and eventually taken over by the St Lawrence Printing Company. In the 1930’s the Iroquois Post merged with the Matilda Advocate and published as the Iroquois Post and Matilda Advocate until 1965. In 1950 it was printed by linotype. Ken Kirkby joined the staff that year to be the Linotype operator. He purchased the company in 1962. He operated the Post until 1974, when he sold it to Mr. and Mrs. James Morrison. Ken Kirkby bought the paper back in 1982 after it had been declared bankrupt under Ellwood Patterson and Bryan Dwyer. The last issue of the Post was published on May 16, 1982.
The paper then became known under the name of the Iroquois Chieftain.
Many of our issues of the Iroquois Post, Iroquois Post and Matilda Advocate and Iroquois Chieftain were donated by Roger and Sandra Lee Johnson, who saved these papers from a dumpster after the demise of the Chieftain. Many other issues, especially the St Lawrence News and the Iroquois Post and Matilda Advocate were donated by Howard and Leslie Kirkby.
