Biographical history
Terry Crowley, professor emeritus at University of Guelph, was born in Toronto, Ontario. Throughout his life he has been an educator and an involved member of the Guelph community. He was a professor at the University of Guelph in the History Department from 1971 until 2010, and he was chair of the department from 2003 to 2008.. His research interests include Canadian history, with particular emphasis on rural, agricultural, and women’s history. He obtained his doctorate degree in History from Duke University in 1975 and his Master’s degrees from Duke University (1970) and Carlton University (1968).
Crowley served on the university senate and a number of university committees. His principal scholarly and university activities included the Ontario History editorial board (1992-8), Eighteenth-Century Studies 1985 Conference Committee, Co-organizer of Ontario Agricultural History Seminar Committee (1975-8), the Faculty Grievance Board (1987-2002), India Semester Abroad Coordinator (2000-2003), Chair of the College of Arts Awards Committee and Senate Awards Committee, Senate Internal Review Committee (1999-2000), University Appeals Committee (1982-1986, 1997-9), University Sexual and Gender Harassment Committee, United Way Committee, Civic Centre Committee (1993-1995), History Department Graduate Coordinator (1978-80, 1990-4), University Senate (1976-9, 1988-9), B.A. Liaison Coordinator (1979-1981), and Board of Undergraduate Studies (1976-9).
Crowley was also actively involved in the Guelph community Guelph Chamber Music Society Board (1992-9), Wellington County Historical Research Society (1990-4), McCrae House Planning Restoration Committee (1986), Guelph Spring Festival Board of Directors for Edward Johnson Music Foundation, Guelph-Wellington Legal Services Clinic Committee (1983), Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Centre Board of Directors (1981-2), Guelph-Wellington South NDP member and a provincial candidate in 1981, Guelph Civic Board of Management (1976-1981), and Amnesty International (1976-77). Crowley also regularly particpated in speaking engagements for local organizations.
Crowley, an author of numerous articles, chapters, and books, has written about topics that include Agnes Macphail, Isabel Murphy Skelton, Letitia Youmans. He is the author of Marriage of Minds: Isabel Oscar Skelton Reinventing Canada (2003), The College on the Hill: A New History of the Ontario Agricultural College, 1874-1990 (1999), Canadian History: Pre-Confederation to 1867, The Birth of a Nation (1993), Agnes Macphail and the Politics of Equality (1990), and One Voice: A History of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (1989) as well as numerous entries in reference books, articles, and book chapters.
Crowley and his partner, Terry Jackman, were longtime Guelph residents; they currently reside in Toronto.
