Biographical history
Betty Roodish Goodwin (1923-2008) was a Montreal-based printmaker and installation artist.
Custodial history
The majority of materials now constituting the Betty Goodwin consideration were transferred directly from the artist’s studio to the Art Gallery of Ontario in February 2009. The remaining materials were transferred directly from the artist’s studio to the Art Gallery of Ontario in July 2012.
Scope and content
Series comprises notebooks and sketchbooks used and kept by Betty Goodwin. The volumes may contain sketches and drawings, notes on artistic learning and practice, diaristic writing, personal reflections, travel journaling, and memoranda (such as addresses and upcoming dates). Specific contents vary over time and according to the character of a particular volume. Goodwin typically maintained more than one notebook at the same time, so that the dates of individual volumes tend to overlap significantly.

Physical description
The date ranges assigned to each notebook or sketchbook are based on the archivist’s best attempt to find actual written dates within the volume. Where dates are supplied by the archivist (based on the contents of the volume), they are given in square brackets. Note that Betty Goodwin sometimes assigned dates to a volume retrospectively (often using a sticky note label), but these dates do not always agree with dates found on journal pages. In cases of contradictory dates, the latter have been used.
Volumes are arranged in approximate chronological order, based on the earliest date of each volume. This order is in no way definitive, particularly in the case of early sketchbooks for which no date information could be found. Volumes have been numbered by the archives for purposes of identification only.
Some volumes contain collected objects such as pressed flowers and leaves, photographs, and postcards.
Betty Goodwin occasionally placed photocopies of pages in place of their originals: in these instances, the originals were usually given away by the artist, according to René Blouin.
