Biographical history
Stephen J. (Steve) Peters was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on January 19, 1963. He earned a B.A., History from the University of Western Ontario in 1985. He served as Alderman (1988-1991) and Mayor (1991-1999) of the City of St. Thomas. In the 1999 Ontario provincial election, Peters ran as a member of the Liberal Party of Ontario and was elected as MPP, Elgin-Middlesex-London. He served in that capacity from June 3, 1999-September 7, 2011. During his tenure as MPP, Peters also served as Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, October 23, 2003-June 29, 2005; as Ontario Minister of Labour, June 29, 2005-October 30, 2007; and as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, November 28, 2007-November 21, 2011. After leaving public service, Peters was appointed Executive Director of the Cambridge, Ontario-based Alliance of Ontario Food Processors on May 2, 2012.
