Administrative history
The congregation of St. John's shared a log church with the Presbyterians in the 1840-1850 period. In 1873, the Anglican congregation built their own church on land donated by the Hopper family. St. John's Church and Burial Ground were consecrated May 14, 1876 by Bishop J. Travers Lewis. Around 1902, the church was closed for repairs and services were held in the house of George B. Hopper. Arthur Hopper repaired the church and in 1903 services were resumed. A new rectory was built in 1963. A new church building was constructed in 1965 and the cornerstone was laid on February 27, 1966 by Bishop Ernest Samuel Reed. St. John the Divine, Nepean was dedicated by Bishop Reed on June 5th of that year. At this time, the cemetery was declared a heritage site. The 25th anniversary of the present church building and the 150th anniversary of church life in Nepean were celebrated in 1990. The last service in this building was held in May of 2002 and the congregation began worshipping in rented space in Barrhaven.
