    Administrative history

On 16 October 1953 the 79th Field Regiment (Royal Canadian Artillery) was re-designated the 3rd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (3RCHA). The regiment was originally founded in May 1951 for services in Germany for NATO as part of 27 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group. The 79th Field Regiment then proceeded to Hohne, Germany in December 1951, where its re-designation came into effect. 3RCHA did not officially adopt it until their return to Petawawa in December 1973. 3RCHA participated in the Korean War, United Nations tour duties in Cyprus (1968, 1972 and 1982), NATO exercises in Norway (1976) and Europe (1970), the FLQ Crisis (1970), flood-fighting in Manitoba, the Pan Am Games, yearly avalanche control duties at Roger Pass, British Columbia, etc.. On 30 July 1992 3RCHA was reduced to nil strength as a result of overall Canadian Forces reductions. On 1 August 1992 the re-designation of 3RCHA to 1RCHA became effective.
