The Royal Canadian Air Force Historical Section was created after the Second World War and was small, with a maximum of five people on staff. The staff contributed to the RCAF magazine Roundel, and answered inquiries. When the three services unified in 1968, the RCAF Historical Section became part of the new Directorate of History under Colonel Charles P. Stacey, the former head of the Canadian Army Historical Section.

The collection was compiled during 1946 to 1968 by the RCAF Historical Section staff.
Scope and content
Collection consists of materials documenting the activities of the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1946 to the 1960s. It mostly includes documents on Home War Establishment, Overseas War Establishment, Post Second World War Establishment and other units the RCAF, National Defence and the United States military. The collection is divided in 4 Record Groups:
• Record Group 1: Home War Establishment
• Record Group 2: Overseas War Establishment
• Record Group 3: Post Second World War Establishment
• Record Group 4: Other Units

The Kardex Collection includes operational and administrative files of Air Force Overseas Headquarters in London, UK during the Second World War. There are also post Second World War records. They are filed according to the Directorate Kardex classification system under the reference number 181. The Collection was closed to new acquisitions in 1971.
