Biographical history
Robert Hall Haynes (1931-1998), educator, author and scientist, has been associated with York University since his appointment to the Department of Biology in 1968. He served as chair of the department, 1968-1973, and was named a University Distinguished Research Professor in 1966. Prior to his tenure at York, Haynes taught at the University of Chicago (1958-1964) and the University of California-Berkeley (1964-1968). Haynes has served on several research-related boards and committees including the Canadian Association for Advanced Research (1987- ), National Research Council of Canada (1975-1982), and chair of the Advisory Committee on Life Sciences, of the National Science, Engineering and Research Council of Canada (1985-1987), as well as of several Canadian and American bodies dealing with biophysics and mutagenesis. He has also served as a visiting professor and/or research fellow at facilities around the world including the U.S.S.R., China, Saudi Arabia, Japan and other countries. Professor Haynes retired from York in 1992. Haynes is the author of over 100 articles in scholarly journals, as well as editor of several works including, ' The molecular basis of life' (1968), 'Man and the biological revolution' (1975), 'Prevention of a biological and toxin arms race and the responsibility of scientists,' (1985). He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of correspondence of Robert Hall Haynes with fellow scientists, researchers, institutions and York University colleagues concerning his research and teaching activities. The correspondence files are arranged in two ways: for the period of 1958-1979, the material is arranged chronologically; for the period of 1980-1984, the correspondence is arranged alphabetically.
