    Biographical history

    Richard P. Brimmell was a local historian and former Guelph Mercury newspaper editor. He came to Guelph in 1954. Richard Brimmell worked at the Guelph Mercury as city editor and later as a managing editor until 1960. He then accepted the position of business administrator at the Wellington County Board of Education, a position he held until 1970. During his time at the Board of Education, he served as the president of the Ontario Association of School Business Officials. After returning to the Guelph Mercury briefly in the 1970's, he joined the City of Guelph as City Purchasing agent, retiring after thirteen years of service. In addition to his work with the Mercury he also wrote editorials and columns for the Guelph Tribune. Mr. Brimmell also served as Chairmen of the Guelph Public Library Board.

    Throughout his career, Richard Brimmell continued to write local histories and articles chronicling Guelph and its stories. As a member of the 11th Field Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery, Richard Brimmell wrote a regimental history. He also continued his community service with the Evergreen Seniors Centre in Guelph.

    He died November 28, 2007 at 79 years of age.

    These items were collected and assembled by Richard P. Brimmell which he held until donating to the Guelph Public Library archives.

    Scope and content

    This collection consists of correspondence, books, articles, pamphlets, photographs and clippings collected by R.P. (Dick) Brimmell that document a range of events and subjects in the history of Guelph. Included are files on the 11th field regiment, Italian-Canadians in Guelph, material collected in Mr. Brimmell's capacity as a newspaper columnist, the Guelph Civic Arts Centre construction, the 16th battery, public schooling in Guelph, and the City's coat of arms.

    These records also contain an assortment of administrative and executive records from a variety of clubs and organizations in which Mr. Brimmell participated. These include the Guelph Cricket Club, the Guelph Pipe Band, the Guelph Wellington Men's Club, and the Guelph Community Boating Club.

    The photographs in this collection include aerial photographs of Guelph, pictures of homes, construction projects, military exercises and events and local landmarks and personalities.

    Immediate source of acquisition

    The majority of photographs in this collection were donated to the Guelph Public Library by Richard P. Brimmell in 1984. The textual component was donated in 2003.
