Administrative history
Uplands, Ontario, was selected as a site for a British Commonwealth Air Training Plan Flying School in 1939. Flying stopped in 1945, and Maintenance Command moved away in 1947. Service association with the Station then ceased until 1950 when a RCAF expansion came about. Since that time it has been part of both Air Defence and Air Transport Commands. In order to provide common support services for units, which are collocated in a particular area, a number of Canadian Forces Bases had been established as part of the Canadian Forces organization structure. Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Uplands was authorized effective 1 April 1966. On 2 October 1972 CFB Uplands and CFB Rockcliffe were disbanded, and CFB Ottawa was allocated to the Commander Air Transport Command and assumed the responsibility for providing support services to all units and elements which were earlier assigned to CFB Uplands and CFB Rockcliffe, until more recent changes had been made in the 1990s.
