From: St. Thomas Daily Times, March 2, 1917. “The flag floated at half mast yesterday in honour of Pte. Thomas J. McColl, son of Mr. & Mrs. Hugh McColl, of this place. The deceased had enlisted in the west some months ago and had been on active service in France but owing to serious illness was returned to an English army hospital in England. He was about 30 years of age. Left to mourn besides his parents are two sisters Mrs. Andrew Lang, Ridgetown and Mrs. John Speirn of Detroit, and two brothers, Archie of Seattle, Washington and Hugh of Cahill, ON. The deceased was unmarried and a carpenter by trade and enlisted with the 72nd Highlanders at Vancouver. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the community”.
