Item is the Powe Family Bible, 1847-1889. The bible originally belonged to Robert Powe and Catherine Parsons, natives of Bideford, Devon, England. Family births and deaths are recorded on the last page of the Bible. Entries between 1847 and 1889. Notes written in pencil on the last page show the last entry is regarding the death of William Parsons Powe who died 15 Sep 1916.

      General note

      The Powe family emigrated to Canada in 1857 by way of New York Harbour and eventually settled in Port Hope where Robert worked as a shoemaker. His son William Parsons Powe was a wagon maker and his other son Thomas Henry Powe a photographer. Thomas Powe later settled in Michigan where he continued his work as a photographer. The Powe family resided in Port Hope until c. 1890 and were neighbours with William and Susan (Rowden) Pym.
