Biographical history
Norman Thomas "Tom" Long (1916-1992) was born in Port Hope to Alfred Henry Clarke Long and Edna Alice (nee Gibson) on 22 Jul 1916. He worked as an insurance agent, ticket agent, and real estate agent, during his years running the Long Brothers Insurance Agency in downtown Port Hope. He married Mary Alicia Edith "Maunie" Emeno (1923-2007), and the pair had two daughters. Tom was an avid local historian, collector, and very knowledgeable about the history of Port Hope. He died on 15 Oct 1992, and is buried at Port Hope St. John's Anglican Cemetery.
Custodial history
Collection originally belonged to Tom Long (d. 1992), uncle of Donor. Donated to the Ganaraska Region Archives by Robin Long, 1994-2004. Removed from "Uncle Tom's Cabinet," 2013.
Scope and content
Series consists of a file folder with fifteen (15) documents inside. (1) A Port Hope Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture Leisure Guide for the fall and winter of 1996-1997. The guide contains a mayors message, registration information, information on swimming programs, recreational programs, arenas, parks and trails, community groups and also a map of Port Hope. (2) A brochure titled "Cycling in Cobourg, Port Hope and Area" and includes a map of both Port Hope and Cobourg as well as cycling information (3-10) Information about the various services, companies and industries in Port Hope including; strategic location, municipal profile, municipal taxes, labour information and transportation, water, electricity and gas, Port Hope Industrial Inventory, Industrial Neighbours, and Welcome to Port Hope (11) A brochure advertising antiques and decorative items in Port Hope (12) Port Hope bus schedule and price list (13) a tourist guide to Port Hope with contact information for Municipal Departments, accommodations, restaurants, banks, supermarkets, drug stores, churches and the hospital (14) Port Hope and District Map and Street Guide (15) business card for Frank Priatel, the economic development officer.
