Historia biográfica

Dr. Peter Stanley Schmalz resides in Walkerton, Ontario.

His education includes the following:
1962 Bachelor of Arts, University of Western Ontario
1962 Secondary School Teacher’s Certificate
1972 Master of Arts Degree, University of Waterloo
1985 Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Schmalz taught for five years at John F. Ross C.V.I., Guelph (1962-1967). In 1967, he began teaching at Walkerton District Secondary School. He became the Head of the History & Contemporary Studies Department at the school, a position from which he retired in or around 1995. In addition to his daily teaching job, Schmalz taught summer courses at Queen’s University in Kingston, and night courses for Georgian Collage and the University of Waterloo. He also developed and taught a course called “Man in Society” for the Ontario Ministry of Education, Correspondence Division.

From 1991 – 1992, he was seconded by the Bruce County Board of Education, through a grant from Employment and Immigration Canada, to develop a native Co-operative Education Pilot Project with two reserves for the Bruce County Board of Education.

In 1993, Dr. Schmalz received the 1993 Hilroy Fellowship for Innovations in Education award for a computer role-playing simulation which develops non-Native empathy for the century-long Native experiences on reserves.

Dr. Schmalz has researched local native land claims and issues extensively. In the 1990s and 2000s, Dr. Schmalz was hired to create reports for the Ministry of Natural Resources, First Nations communities, the provincial government and federal government.

In addition to various published articles and book reviews, his works include the following books:

• The County Town Question, Wiarton: The Walkerton Historical Society, 1982

• The History of the Saugeen Indians, Ottawa: The Ontario Historical Society, Research Publication No. 5, 1977

Dr. Schmalz was “honourably mentioned” by The Canadian Historical Association in 1991 in relation to his book, The Ojibwa of Southern Ontario, which also won the 1993 Joseph Brant Award, given by The Ontario Historical Society, as “the best book dealing with Ontario’s multicultural history published in a three-year period.”

This fonds reflects Dr. Peter S. Schmalz’s career as an educator, researcher and author from the late 1960s to early 2000s. He used these resources in the creation of a Master's Thesis, a Doctoral Thesis, numerous learned articles, several books, and reports for the Ministry of Natural Resources, First Nations communities, the provincial government and federal government. The focus of his research and writing concerned First Nations as well as Town of Walkerton history.

This fonds includes over 700 published books (not including duplicates) which reflect Dr. Schmalz's primary interest in aboriginal contact with Europeans.

The fonds also consists of documents related to the history of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Territory (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation) which reflect the communications and relationship between the First Nations and the Imperial and Canadian governments. These documents consist of photocopied records, many of which were copied from microfilm held by the National Archives of Canada, including material from NAC's reference number RG 10 (parts of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development fonds). Records also include microform, brochures, audiotapes and videotapes, newspapers and clippings, magazines and research cards.

Material in the fonds also reflects the history and experience of First Nations across North America.

The material further reflects Dr. Schmalz’s leadership in education, particularly as it relates to both the education of First Nation students and the education of others about the history of First Nations. Records relate to a co-operative education project, field archaeology and native studies summer course, as well as curriculum created by Peter Schmalz and other education resources.

Dr. Schmalz’s work, activities and interests are also reflected through his correspondence, publications, theses, and essays.

Finally, the fonds consists of articles, maps and original records reflecting Dr. Schmalz’s interest and research concerning the history of the Town of Walkerton and other regional history resources.

At the time of donation, the material (not including books listed in Series 1) were donated in boxes numbered from 1 to 43 and four unnumbered boxes. The items were physically left in that order (unless otherwise noted). Intellectual arrangement into seven series, with subordinate files, was imposed by archival staff based on the primary content and form of each item/folder. Original box numbers are noted in the “Arrangement” note in each file / item description.
