Series 1: Diaries
Subseries A: Benjamin Benedict Crawford (1800, 1810-1859)

  • This Series consists primarily of diaries of Benjamin B. Crawford. These include a diary of a trip to Upper Canada in 1800, as well as yearly diaries from 1810 to 1859. Diary entries relate to; the weather; farm activities; social events in the community; births, marriages and deaths of his family and his neighbours; experiments with crops and prices of supplies and produce; Kings County court sessions; the Rebellion of 1837; elections; and services in the Anglican church in the Ingersoll area. Daniel Nathan Crawford, the eleventh child of Benjamin Benedict Crawford, continued his father’s diary during the latter’s final illness, and after his death for the remainder of 1859.
  • This subseries also includes transcripts of a majority of the diaries, made by Blanche Crawford, in 1938.

Subseries B: James Augustus Crawford (1865-1882)

  • The diaries of James Augustus Crawford, a son of Benjamin Benedict Crawford, note farm duties, and family and community activities.

Subseries C: Leeman Wallace Crawford (1877)

  • The diary of Leeman Wallace Crawford (son of James Augustus Crawford, and a carriage- maker at London), contain entries describing his work, with some references to politics, and family and community affairs.

Series 4: Genealogy ([18-- ] – 2007)

  • A very complete and detailed genealogy of the generations of the Crawford family in North America beginning with John and Jane Henderson Crawford, whom arrived in Connecticut, United States from Ireland. It contains dates and places of birth, marriages and deaths; details on families into which Crawfords married; and often a description of the individuals the early genealogy was prepared in 1927 by Mrs. Olive Arnold Crawford of Ingersoll, Ontario, with the assistance of certain relatives, while the later and more complete family history was completed by Ruth Ellis.
  • Includes research papers and notes, newspaper clippings, and photographs, as well as a copy of “The Crawford Family” by Ruth Ellis.

Series 5: Almanacs (1761, 1814-1853)

  • Contains New Brunswick, New England, Maine, Canada West Farmer’s Almanacs, and several Medical Almanacs. These are arranged alphabetically according to the locality for which they were calculated. Occasionally, a diary was bound into an Almanac, and these volumes have been stored with the diaries.

Part of District of Brock fonds

This series consists of the administrative and legislative records of the District of Brock which replaced the administrative powers of the magistrates of the Quarter Sessions. The series is divided into the following subseries:
A) Minutes
B) By-laws
C) Finance
C1 – Treasurer
C2 – Auditor
D) Warden
E) Clerk
F) Council

The first subseries consists of the Minutes of the District Council, which are divided into three volumes. A part of this series includes motions and rough minutes.

The second subseries contains the hand-written by-laws of the District Council, and loose drafts and copies of by-laws.

The third subseries includes letters, assessment lists and statements that provide an excellent picture of the raising and expenditure of monies as well as provides information on some of the County’s earliest settlers. This subseries is divided into two sub-subseries: Treasurer and Auditor. The Treasurer's (H.C. Barwick, 1842-1853) records consist of general correspondence, assessment lists, and a variety of financial statements and accounts. Correspondence includes requests from individuals for reassessment of their property taxes whereas Assessment records include lists of lands returned by the assessors of several townships in the District of Brock. These lists include the name of the Township and the description of the portion of each lot, concession and acreage. In addition, there are eleven bound volumes which give assessment information from all of the townships except Burford. Financial statements cover a number of areas such as receipts and disbursements of taxes arising out of Wild Land taxes, statements of the County House and Gaol Fund and statements related to Public Improvements and the School Fund. Accounts include general accounts for services provided as well as a School monies account ledger. The Auditors records consist of audited accounts, statements, reports, and applications for the office of the Auditor.

The fourth subseries contains the Warden’s files, 1842-1849. The first Warden of the new District Council appointed by the Governor was Peter Boyle de Blaquire, the standing local member of the Provincial legislative council.

The fifth subseries consists of the Clerk’s files. It contains miscellaneous correspondence and copies of proceedings of public meetings. The appointed clerk of the District of Brock was William Lapenotiere, a son of a post captain at the battle of Trafalgar.

The last subseries, Council files, presents a detailed account of the structure of the District Council; such topics include building of roads and bridges and the provision of education.

The Account Books list the rates and prices of each shareholder for the sale of milk, cream, butter and cheese. They also include monthly statements of the amount of milk/cream delivered, etc as well as general receipts and payments. In addition, there is an index prepared by the Oxford Historical Society providing a detailed list of names of the shareholders of the East Zorra-Blandford Cheese Manufacturing Co. and the years of their involvement in the Corporation.
