History
Established in 1969, The Ottawa Jewish Archives serves to preserve the history, growth, and development of the Jewish community of Ottawa and the National Capital Region. The Ottawa Jewish Archives is dedicated to its objectives of gathering, documenting, and preserving the collective memory of the community and ensuring that our holdings of historical records, artifacts, and ephemera remain accessible to all persons.

The mandate of The Ottawa Jewish Archives is to acquire, preserve, and make available the documented historical record and material culture reflective of the collective memory of the Jewish community of Ottawa and the National Capital Region.
To be considered for acquisition and accession into the collection, material must conform to the Archives’ mandate or complement the existing collection or an item therein. The Archives will actively pursue acquisitions that cover any gaps in its current collection. The Archives must be able to provide proper care, conservation, storage, and security under conditions ensuring their preservation and availability, in keeping with professional standards. The acquisition of objects shall conform to all international, federal, provincial, and municipal laws, regulations and standards.
Buildings
Built by Barry J. Hobin & Associates Architects Inc. in 1998, the Ottawa Jewish Archives operates under the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and is located within the Soloway Jewish Community Centre.
Holdings
The Ottawa Jewish Archives is home to over 25,000 records and 8,500 photographs which detail the community’s history beginning circa 1880 to present. Generally speaking the Ottawa Jewish Archives collections are comprised of fonds representing Individuals and Families; Businesses, Community Organisations; Educational Organizations; Congregations; etc.

The Ottawa Jewish Archives is open to the public Mondays-Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Access conditions and requirements
Visitors to the Soloway Jewish Community Centre (SJCC) must present their SJCC membership card or photo ID (for non-members) at the reception desk.
It is recommended that researchers make an appointment with the archivist prior to their visit. Research Requests and Appointments can be made by e-mail (archives@jewishottawa.com) or by phone (613-798-4696 ext. 260).
