Administrative history
The Order of the Eastern Star is an affiliated organization of the Masonic Lodge, founded in 1850 by Robert Morris. The Order is based on the teachings of the bible that display heroic conduct and moral values. It is dedicated to providing services to the communities in which the chapters can be found. The Order of the Eastern Star was created in order to provide the sense of community and services that were part of Freemasonry, but for men and women. The first annual meetings were held in 1877.
The Order is open to men and women, with different entrance requirements for each sex. Women must be either a widow, wife, daughter, sister, or mother of a full Mason; Men had to be a Master mason to join the Order. Today, the Order now allows other female relatives to join the organization.
The Order of the Eastern Star is still extant to this day, and the Order’s main headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.
The Empress Chapter was founded in April 1953 in Port Stanley, Ontario. The chapter was active through most of the twentieth century, and was wound down on November 8th, 1980 as it was invited to join with Central Star Branch #57.
