In accordance with the requirements of the Treasury Board, the National Defence Records Management Service was responsible for providing an adequate system of classification for the files used at National Defence Headquarters.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of DND publications entitled “National Defence File Classification Manual: Volume 2, Codes” and “File Classification Manual: Volume 3, Numerical File List.” Issued on the joint authority of the Deputy Minister of National Defence and the Chief of the Defence Staff, the publication is designed to provide an inventory of files used at National Defence Headquarters for the convenience of both military and civilian personnel.
