    Administrative history

The Millhaven Women’s Institute was founded on April 21, 1955 with Mrs. James (Reta) Rickey as the first President. This branch was a part of the Lennox District Women’s Institute. There were nineteen members present at the first meeting. The group disbanded in December of 1994. The members of the branch often acted as a concerned voice for the community to the local Council. For instance, the branch sent a letter to the Provincial Police in the 1950s regarding the “…unruly disturbing traffic around Millhaven dock all hours of the night”. The solution to this problem is not known as there is no further reference to it in the minute books. The majority of the funds raised by the branch were from catering dinners and weddings, and holding euchre tournaments. Also, a member brought a mystery parcel to each meeting. Tickets were sold for this parcel and a name drawn for the winner. Members of Millhaven branch enjoyed “Short Courses” on a wide variety of topics, such as Crewel Stitchery. Locally, the branch gave donations to the Lennox and Addington Historical Society to go towards their museum, Senior Citizen’s Club, Lennox and Addington Safety Swimming Committee, Bath Minor Softball League, Salvation Army, Humane Society in Napanee, Camp Trillium, Tercentennial Lodge, ARC Industries, and Bath Canada Week Committee. They also canvassed for the Cancer Society, made diapers for the County Health Unit, and contributed to Children’s Aid Society and Arthritis Society. Efforts were made to make a difference in the community. The members made Christmas baskets for the sick and shut-ins around the holidays. When a new playground was built in Bath, the branch contributed to a slide. They often hosted a display and served tea at the Napanee Fair. The local schools received a First Aid kit and regular supplies. The branch also presented an award for the graduate with the highest marks in grade eight. For a short time period in the early 1970s, Millhaven branch owned what was known to the residents of the community as the ‘Layer Cake Hall’. This hall has housed many non-profit and various religious groups. However, the upkeep proved to be too expensive for the Women’s Institute, so they gave the Hall to the Hospitality Club. Within the following decade, the branch faced difficulty with continuing to hold their meetings in the hall due to controversies over entitlement towards rent versus free usage. Some of the past Women’s Institute Presidents of Millhaven were: Mrs. James (Reta) Rickey (1955-1956), Mrs. Harold (Eleanor) Kilgannon (1956-1960; 1963-1965; 1970-1973), Mrs. John (Marguerite) Franklin (1960-1962; 1973-1975), Mrs. Hazel Franklin (1962-1963; 1975-1978), Mrs. Thomas (Mildred) Greasby (1965-1968), Mrs. Campbell (Maria) Millar (1968-1970), Mrs. Marjorie Littlefield (1978-1986; 1990-1994), and Mrs. Douglas (Margaret) Stevenson (1986-1990).
