Biografie

Michael Wladyka was born in 1918 in Oshawa. His parents came to Canada from the Ukraine where they met and were married in Port Hope, 1915. His parents frequently brought him to Port Hope on weekends. He graduated from Oshawa Vocational Institute and joined the Canadian Armed Forces shortly after. He served with the Queen's Own Rifles in the European Theatre during World War II. He returned to Canada in 1946 and in 1950 bought the Queen's Hotel in Port Hope along with his brother Bill. In 1955 Wladyka ran for town council and was elected for two terms. In 1957 he ran for Deputy Reeve and served in that office and on County Council for the next three years. Wladyka then ran successfully for the position of Mayor in 1967 and served, with a two-year exception, until 1978. Wladyka was also involved with the community in several different ways. During his time as mayor, he was elected as President of the Association of Mayors and Reeves in 1970, and as President of the Small Urban Municipalities in 1972. He also served as charter President of the East Durham Historical Society in 1963. He has also served as President of the Port Hope Kiwanis Club, Chairman of the Port Hope Library Board, President of the Port Hope Cancer Society, Director of the Port Hope Chamber of Commerce, and as Elder and Sunday school teacher of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Wladyka and his wife Mary had three boys during their marriage, Daniel, Michael Jr. and David. He died Aug 2002 and was buried in Union Cemetery.

Geschiedenis beheer

Donated to the Ganaraska Region Archives beginning in 1995 and continuing on from that time until the year of his death, 2002. He collected the vast amount of material on the people and history of Port Hope from the time he entered public office in Port Hope.

Bereik en inhoud

Collection consists of a large amount of information on Port Hope, the former Township of Hope (Hope Township), and surrounding area. Some of the subjects covered are family histories, churches, hydro power, organizations, clubs and societies, floods, Port Hope harbour, historical information on the town and area, houses, public buildings, industry and small businesses, railways, viaducts and bridges along with original newspapers reflecting on the history of Port Hope as well as information on municipal matters and various government reports. The historical information covers a period from the mid-19th century to 2000. The fonds also consists of a large number of photographs. It also consists of a number of newspaper editions including special editions.
It has been arranged into twelve (12) series: (1) Family Histories; (2) Churches; (3) Hydro Power (Eldorado; Port Hope Hydro); (4) Organizations / Clubs / Societies; (5) Floods and Flood Control (Port Hope Floods; Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority; Corbett's Pond and Dam; Port Hope Harbour); (6) Historical Information on Port Hope and Hope Township (General Historical Information on Port Hope; Historical Information on Port Hope Houses; Historical Information on Port Hope Public Buildings); (7) Railways / Viaducts / Bridges; (8) Industry and Small Businesses; (9) Municipal Matters in Port Hope / Government Reports; (10) Books, Posters, Maps and Glass Negatives; (11) Newspapers; (12) Photographs.
