Biographical history

Marvin Carl Smith was born on February 24th, 1910 in Waterloo County, Ontario. His parents were Oscar John Smith (January 1st, 1879 - June 1963) and Clara (Cress) Smith (June 24th, 1878 - October 12th, 1969).Oscar John Smith owned and operated the Oscar J. Smith Shoe Store in St. Jacobs, Ontario. The building was built in 1860 by John Smith and was used as a general store and post office until it was bought by Oscar John Smith in 1898. The store was renovated in 1906 and served the community until the 1950's.

Oscar John Smith's parents (Carl S. Smith (1850-1941) and Maria (Kinzel) Smith (October 12th, 1852 - November 3rd, 1935)) immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1861 and settled in the Waterloo Region ca. 1863. Oscar's father was also a shoemaker.

Marvin C. Smith married Velaria L. Saddler (December 23rd, 1910 - 1997) in 1931 and they lived their entire lives in the St. Jacobs area. Marvin was an active historian and collected histories about significant people who played a role in shaping the town of St. Jacobs. Marvin passed away in 2000.

The Marvin C. Smith fonds consists of photographs and textual records related to Marvin Smith's family history and the history of St. Jacobs, Ontario. Featured are photographs of the Oscar J. Smith Shoe Store which operated in St. Jacobs from ca. 1898 - 1950. Several of the photographs in the Marvin C. Smith fonds were featured in Virgil Emerson Martin's book "The Early History of Jakobstettel" (1979). The book provides contextual historical information about the Smith family and items featured in the fonds.
