    Biographical history

    Martin K. Levinson was born in Ottawa on March 31, 1909 and died in Jerusalem, June 18, 1996. He was the son of Sophia and Abraham Levinson. Martin attended McGill University in Montreal at a time when it was difficult to obtain entrance. He graduated in 1930 and he remained in Montreal until he completed his final exams for a chartered accountant in 1932. In 1933 Martin opened his own accounting firm, Martin K Levinson & Company, in Ottawa. He also became manager of his father’s movie theater, the Rialto, in 1936. He was approached by Peat Marwick Mitchell in 1964 and subsequently become a managing partner of their first Ottawa office. “ He was also the first Jewish partner in Canada and the only Orthodox Jew in the senior level of their organization.” He trained other noted Ottawa Jewish accountants Milton Kimmel, Morris Agulnick, Joe Ages and Issie Landau. Martin retired in 1974. Martin K. Levinson married Elizabeth Freidgut of Regina, Saskatchewan on December 13, 1936, in Regina. Both took an active role in the Jewish Community of Ottawa and often traveled to Israel. Elizabeth died in January 1989.

    Fond consists of business and personal files and 32 b&w, l col. photographs. Business files include legal agreements (1936), office manual, and an audited financial statement of the Jewish Community Centre of Ottawa by Martin K. Levinson & Company (1963). Personal files include life insurance policies, speeches, newspaper clippings, records of community activities, certificates (including marriage), personal documents (including passports (1977-2001), correspondence (1939-1996)(including Rabbi William Margolis letters), his mother, Sophia Levinson’s will (1941), his father, Abraham Levinson’s cheques and short term notes and some personal documents of his wife Elizabeth Levinson.
