Biographical history

Margaret “Maggie” Armstrong Breden (1865 – 1957) was born October 23, 1865 to William Breden and her mother, Mary Ann McKee. She had two sisters, Dr. Wilhelmena Breden and a Mrs. Davis. Margaret married her first husband, George Ira Ham on May 28, 1884 and they had two children, Harry Breden Ham, born May 23, 1885 and Annie Almeda Ham, known as Eno, on May 4, 1888. George died in 1914 and Margaret remarried Sir Henry Sharp in 1923 and became Lady Sharp. She died December 30th, 1957 and is buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.

In 1906 Margaret Breden Ham donated $1000.00 to the Odessa Public Library Board to be used in the purchase of a building for a library. A year later, the Library Board purchased the A.Y. Kenyon brick house on Main Street in Odessa (Lot 180) and they named the library in honour of her. Over the years, Lady Sharp would donate photos to the library and send them well wishes. To this day, the Odessa Public Library is known as the Margaret Breden Ham Memorial building.
