Notice biographique

Lorena Beck (nee Myers) was trained as a commercial artist in Calgary and Toronto. She and husband Peter Beck were both photography enthusiasts, and both used Pentax Spotmatics with telezooms and wide angle lenses. Lorena had an additional interest of architecture, well represented in her photography. According to her husband, she was said to have a "photographic memory" for architecture, seeing buildings in the real world and knowing which books they were shown in.

Peter was also trained as an artist, and apprenticed as a commercial artist before the Second World War. As of 1958, Peter J. C. Beck was an Office and Records Supervisor at Orenda Engines.

The couple were joint-tenants near Inglewood as of June 1955, and Lorena has her married last name. As of 1951, he lived in Brampton with another AVRO employee.

Historique de la conservation

In the late 20th century, Peter and Lorena Beck moved to Victoria. These slides joined them at some point, and were sent by Mr. Beck to David Somers, the then-curator of the Peel Heritage Complex in 2003. Somers transferred them to the Regional archives programme.

Portée et contenu

Fonds consists of slides focusing on the architecture of Peel County, but including images from elsewhere in the province. While Beck was a resident of northern Chinguacousy Township, now part of the Town of Caledon, her images skew to downtown Brampton. Building types include houses, cabins, churches, schools, train stations, theatres, and mail boxes.

Photographs were taken in all of Peel's townships.

Beck's photos of residences in Brampton include structures on Alexander Street, Centre Street, Church Street, David Street, Elizabeth Street, Ellen Street, John Street, Joseph Street, Isabella Street, Lynch Street, Malvern Court, Main Street North, Maple Street, Market Street, Mill Street, Nelson Street, Rosedale Street, Thomas Street, Queen Street, Vodden Street, Wellington Street.
