    Administrative history

The Loop and Cable Department was part of the Seaward Defense Base located at Nova Scotia's HMC Dockyard, home to the Canadian navy's Atlantic fleet. Loop laying officers from the Loop and Cable Department were responsible for the laying of loops and mines at sea for naval defense. There were several types of loops and mines; using magnetic current these they helped to detect and defend against enemy submarines. The CNAV Bluethroat was launched in 1955 and was the only Canadian Naval Auxiliary Vessel on the East coast designed to lay loops and mines. Under the command of Captain John Tibbons, the combined loop and mine layer was fitted with a marine cable winch and the corresponding requirements for marine cable and mine laying operations. The Bluethroat conducted field trials in the late 1950s and early 1960s to test loop and mine laying technology.

    Custodial history

    Scope and content

Fonds consists of material documenting the field trials and proceedings of the CNAV Bluethroat and the work of Loop Laying Officers from 1956 to 1961 along the east coast from Nova Scotia to Labrador. Monthly naval reports are present for most months from 1959 to 1961 detailing various jobs and trials the ship completed. Most of the documentation pertains to a specific field trial - that of August 18-28, 1956 at Red Bay at Belle Isle Straits, Newfoundland and the recovery of the involved equipment two years later. Included are naval messages, memoranda, naval reports, correspondence, handwritten notation, charts, photographs, diagrams, maps, film negatives and other documents. Fonds is divided into eight folders:
    1 - Naval reports from 1956 to 1961
    2 - Correspondence, memoranda
    3 - Naval messages
    4 - Miscellaneous documents
    5 - Maps
    6 - Diagrams
    7 - Photographs, negatives
    8 - Magnetic signatures
