Custodial history
The items were donated to Heritage York for display at Lambton House by various donors including Nancy Dillow, and Joy Cohnstaedt including some items that belonged to Evelyn Carnie Rowe and Thomas Rowe.
Scope and content
Collection consists of a variety of table linens including dinner napkins, tablecloths, table scarves and runners, coasters, and placemats. The items mostly date to the early late 1800s and early 1900s, however it's likely some of the pieces may have a later date of manufacturing.
The collection includes a lot of examples of twentieth century lace styles including Venetian, Battenberg, Broderie Anglaise and Armenian. Additional techniques include white thread embroidery, cutwork embroidery, picot, ladder and scalloped hems, and drawn thread designs. Some of the pieces are a part of matching sets of four or six items. Highlights from the collection include: Nottingham lace coasters; 1940s wine glass coasters or “slippers”; Madeira style cocktail napkins; hand embroidered, monogram napkins; and a floral designed organdy doily.
