            Fonds Bernard Levesque
            CA ON00402 BL · Fonds · 1963

The fonds contains photographic documents relating to the trial of the lumbermen accused of unlawful assembly following the shooting that took place at Reesor Siding, during the night of February 11, 1963. Located 55 kilometers west of Kapuskasing, Reesor Siding was a railroad siding, where pulpwood had been stalked. The wood had been cut and pilled by non-unionized woodsmen, settlers’ cutting permits licensees and members of the Coopérative forestière de Val Rita, a forestry cooperative. The lumbermen on strike were employees of the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company in Kapuskasing and the Kimberly Clark Pulp and Paper in Longlac and were members of locals 2995 and 2693 of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union. They were going to Reesor Siding to bring down the pilled wood so that it wouldn’t get to the Spruce Falls paper mill in Kapuskasing. Upon the arrival of the strikers, members of the cooperative opened fire. Three strikers were killed, eight were wounded.

            Frederick O. Robinson fonds
            Fonds · 1937 - 1963

Frederick O. Robinson was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on Aug. 2, 1903. He worked for 25 years as a skilled machinist in the Port Arthur shops of the C.N.R. until his election to the Ontario legislature in 1943. He continued to work as a C.N.R. machinist between sessions of the legislature, and after his election to the office of mayor, he worked in the C.N.R. shops on weekends.

In August of the same year he was elected to the Ontario legislature as C.C.F. member for Port Arthur. He was M.L.A. for Port Arthur until his defeat in 1951. III. The Ontario Legislature and Provincial Affairs, 1943-51

The fonds informs us of Gib Gilchrist’s professional life and his role and activities within the labour movement in Northern Ontario, and focus predominantly on the late 1950s to early 1960s during the period of membership raiding between USWA Local 6500 and International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers (IUMMSW) Local 598, prior to the 1967 merger of the two unions.

Gilchrist’s various roles and positions within USWA, at different locations such as Elliot Lake and Sudbury, are well documented through correspondence, reports, collective agreements, speeches, photographs, and tape interviews with many prominent personalities in the labour movement. Many files are concerning union organizing in Elliot Lake and Sudbury, but also in the Timmins area. Some files address the negotiations with INCO and different strikes of the miners. The fonds also comprises notes and texts attesting of teaching at Cambrian College in the labour program. Notes, documentation and photographs Gilchrist used to write As Strong as Steel are also included in the fonds.
