Administrative history
The Board of Governors is the chief policy-determining body responsible for the entire administration and activities of the Kingston General Hospital. The current mandate of the Board of Governors is to provide the administrative framework where the quality of patient care, research and training can be achieved to the highest level. The Board of Governors is responsible for the arrangement of funding to fulfill the mission of the Hospital and cooperate with government in the control of the operation of the Hospital. In 1832, a Commission was appointed to superintend and manage the hospital, which was thereafter supervised until 1849 under the Commissioners. In 1849, an act was passed which dissolved the Commissioners in order to create a Corporation to regulate and manage the Hospital. The members of the Corporation served on a Board of Trustees. In 1893, the Management Committee was established as the main committee of the Board of Governors and was accountable for overseeing the Hospital's administration. This Committee became known as the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors are responsible to the community and to the provincial government. Reporting to the Board of Directors are standing committees that are chaired by Board members.
