História biográfica
Juergen Rohwer (1924- ) served with the German Navy during the Second World War and is a German naval historian. He joined the German Navy in 1942, serving as an officer successively on a destroyer, a blockade-runner and a minesweeper. After the war he studied history and geography at the University of Hamburg, and he earned a Ph.D. in 1953. After completion of his University career in 1954 he was active in defence studies and in 1959 he was appointed Director of the Library of Contemporary History at Stuttgart University, becoming an Associate Lecturer there in 1971. He holds positions in several German organizations for the study of defence and weapons, and since 1958 he has been editor of the German Naval magazine "Marine Rundeschau". His many studies of naval history have been published in German. The penultimate of these books has been published in English in two volumes under the title "Chronology of the War at Sea 1939-1945. Dr. Rohwer has also contributed to International magazines and collected works on contemporary history, naval history, the Second World War, and librarianship.

Fonds consists of correspondence between Dr. Juergen Rohwer and the Directorate of History during the period 1962-1969. Much of the correspondence was with E.C. Russell, a Canadian naval historian. At the time of the correspondence Rohwer was the Director of the Library of Contemporary History at Stuttgart University in West Germany. Subjects covered include: the performance of the German acoustic torpedo the "Gnat"; the sinkings of U-boats by Canadian ships; and the sinking of Canadian ships by U-boats. Also includes memoranda.
