    Biographical history

    Joseph thomas Muckle (1887-1967), prost of the Congregation of st. Basil, was a student at St. Michael's College (1905-1908 and Professor of Latin Paleography in the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (1929-1957).

    Administrative history

    The Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS) was first instituted as the Institute of Mediaeval Studies in 1929, by the Basilian Fathers of St. Michael''s College, Toronto. In 1939. PIMS received its Pontifical charter. Distinguished international scholars have lectured, mentored and monitored graduate students in the history, philosophy, art , languages, paleography and culture of the middle ages. Its professors teach also at the Centre for Medieval Studies and the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies. The Praeses or President is Chair of its advisory body, the PIMS Council, and is the chief administrator. A subsidiary of PIMS is its Publications unit. The fonds of individual padministrators, whether Superior or President, may be found under the names: Edmund Joseph McCorkell (1927-1931 and 1934-1940 and 1954-1961), Henry Bellisle (1931-1934), Henry Carr (1929-1935), Gerald Bernard Phelan (1935-1946), Anton Charles Pegis (1946-1954), Laurence Kennedy Shook (1961-1973), Edward Aloysius Synan (1973-1979 and 19 89-1990). Etienne Gilson was its first Director until Gerald B. Phelan took over as its President.
