Notice biographique

Joseph (Joe) Malcolm Millman was born July 29, 1912 at Arima Settsu, Hyogo-Ken, Japan. His parents were Robert Malcolm Millman and Edith Ethelwyn Millman (nee Middleton). Joe was the third of four brothers, Peter, John, Joe and Robert. The family lived in Toyohashi Japan until 1925 when they returned to Toronto. In 1928 the family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Joseph Millman was a graduate from the University of Saskatchewan with degrees in Mechanical Engineering (1934) and Civil Engineering (1935). Joe met his future wife Margaret (Marg) Tressa Thode while studying at the University of Saskatchewan.

From 1931 to 1935 Joe was involved with the Canadian Officer Training Corps (COTC) but did not see active duty in the military. Joe and Marg moved to Toronto in 1935 and Joe was employed as a Test Engineer by Canadian Kodak. In 1946 he partnered with Carson Morrison, Charles Hershfield and Mark Huggins to form the engineering firm of Morrison, Hershfield, Millman and Huggins. The firm is currently known as Morrison Hershfield.

Joseph and Margaret had three children, Thomas Malcolm (1942), Elizabeth (Betty) Marcia (1944), and Dorothy Jean (1948).

Joe was an avid collector among many hobbies. His collections included butterflies, moths, bird eggs, shells from Japan, bark and wood samples, coins and stamps, and pressed plant specimens from Ontario and Japan. Joe was an active member of the Toronto Field Naturalists and organized some outings and walks.

Joe died in July of 1966 at the age of 54 at Lake of Bays.

Portée et contenu

Fonds consists of four volumes of Joseph Millman’s bird observation records, and include distribution records, and records for specific locations, referred to as Special Study Areas, where Millman carried out his bird watching activities.

The volume of Special Study Area records begins with an overview of the types of records created by Millman, including daily listings, life listing, distribution records, and the special study area records. Of these, only the distribution and special study area records are held by the ROM.
