Biographical history

John Allen Elbridge Ivison Thackeray was born in St. Mary's Ontario on December 1, 1907. He married Gertrude Elizabeth Whittaker in Toronto on August 5, 1955. They lived in Waterloo County between ca. 1930 and 1958 and resided at 51 Young Street West in Waterloo from 1945 to 1958. John's mother, Louisa Thackeray lived with them at the house. Gertrude and John had two children, Judith and Robert.

John operated Thackeray Industrial Maintenance Ltd., in Waterloo. He was also an amateur photographer. He used the attic of the house on Young Street as his dark room. His photograph 'On a Summer's Morning', Sipe's Farm, Blair was published in The Waterloo Trust and Savings Company calendar for 1942.

In 1958 the Thackeray family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. John and Gertrude were killed in a motor vehicle accident on February 1, 1983 in Florida.

Custodial history

Martha Taylor found a box of negatives in her attic and gave them to her neighbour, Susan Enns. Susan gave the negatives to her neighbour Philipe (Phil) Elsworthy who digitized and identified the negatives. Phil donated the original negatives and the digital files to the Region of Waterloo Archives.
