Biographical history
James Feeley was born in 1936 and enrolled in the University of St. Michael's College in 1953, taking several courses with professor Marshall McLuhan. A mutual interest in Buckminster Fuller led to a friendship between teacher and student. Feeley left St. Mike's in 1963 (before graduating) to take a position at St. Thomas More College in Saskatoon as a librarian. His first child was born shortly thereafter, in 1964. In a letter written on March 12, 1965, Feeley makes an enquirty to McLuhan about a job as librarian for McLuhan's soon-to-be-opened Center for Culture and Technology. In 1966 Feeley, then in the Order Department of the University of Toronto Library, was asked by Kenneth S. Edey, Director of the Department of Information to serve as McLuhan's link with the University of Toronto Press for the publication of Explorations. Edey was directed to Feeley by Father Black. It appears that Feeley held this position until at least 1968. It is likely that he was finishing his education while working in the Order Department.
In 1970, Feeley left the University of Toronto to take the position of Chief Librarian at Ottawa's Algonquin College. While at Algonquin, he became editor in 1977 of COM-O-LIB, an irregular newsletter of the librarians at the community colleges. Later, he was hired as Director General of Communications in the Department of Communication for the Canadian federal government (where he was involved in the implementation of a government computer project "Telidon") and ended his career as a private consultant in electronic communications.
From 1962 until his death in 1993, Feeley worked on McLuhan's bibliography. The most concentrated effort took place between 1962 and 1968. Feeley was helped in his work by Mrs. M. Stewart, secretary for McLuhan at the Centre for Culture and Technology, and in 1968 he submitted the bibliography for publication to Journal of Canadian Studies. The work was declined. It appears that Feeley worked on the bibliography again in 1973, and likely added to it as information became available until his death in 1993. The University of St. Michael's College Archives has a computerized copy of the latest bibliography dated 2002, nine years after Feeley's death, which may have been updated by a family member or friend.
Over the course of his career, Feeley published articles pertaining to library and information studies, including one entitled "The Library Environment," which was published in Marshall McLuhan's supplement "Explorations" ( in University of Toronto Graduate, Dec. 1967).
