    Biographical history

    James Williams Tyrrell (1863-1945) was an Ontario Provincial and Dominion Land Surveyor who worked extensively in Northern Canada.

    Fonds consists primarily of professional records of James William Tyrrell, in his capacity as a surveyor. It also contains a few records relating to other family members, including records relating to family history created by James William Tyrrell's brother, Henry Grattan Tyrrell, and by his son, Henry Gratton Knox Tyrrell. Professional records of James William Tyrrell include records from the firms Hewson & Tyrrell, Tyrrell & Ford and Tyrrell & McKay. Records relate to engineering and survey projects in the Hamilton area, the surveying of ditches and watercourses, court cases, contracts for surveys from the federal government, field notes, pbulications, contracts and other documents relating to railway construction, township surveys, letterbooks, and other documents. Fonds also contains maps and surveys of some of the projects that James Tyrrell's firm was involved in, including maps relating to an exploratory expedition to the country between Great Slave Lake and Hudson's Bay, and surveys of townships in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Fonds also contains personal records of James William Tyrrell, including a biographical manuscript and correspondence. Other records in the fonds consist of a few personal records of Henry Grattan Tyrrell, including correspondence and a proof copy of his published work "History of Bridge Engineering", correspondence, pamphlets and other records.

    Immediate source of acquisition

    Much of the material in the fonds was acquired in several accessions from 1975-1977 from the Henry Gratton Knox Tyrrell. The remainder of the material was acquired from David Peters, present owner of the firm that James W. Tyrrell founded in 1888.
