Biographical history
Born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1903, Ivan Russell Glassco received military training in Kingston and attended McGill University in Montreal, where he graduated with a degree in architecture. However, it was his brilliance as a cartoonist that prevailed. After having many cartoons published in various newspapers and magazines, he became the staff cartoonist for the Hamilton Spectator in 1930. He quickly gained a reputation as 'one of Canada's outstanding cartoonists' and helped to 'brighten the gloom' of the Depression. After enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Glassco was posted to an RCAF equipment depot in Toronto in January 1941. During that same month, he accidentally shot himself when he was removing his gun from its holster. He died instantly at the age of 38.
