Family Bible
CA ON00428 2013.02-2013.02.01 · Item · 1871
Part of Dillow family fonds

The item is a family Bible. The front cover attributes it to W. M. R. Robertson and Fanny A. Robertson. It features both the Old and New Testaments, a history of religious denominations, an abridged bible dictionary, and over 500 illustrations and maps. Family bibles like this example were incredibly popular in the 1700s and 1800s and provided a means of record keeping and documentation of important events. Pages for events like marriages, deaths, and births are located in the middle of the bible, in between the Old and the New testament. These kinds of bibles are often passed down through generations and are typically a reliable source of genealogical information.

Births and deaths are recorded from the year 1834 until 1912. There are some marriages recorded but without any accompanying dates. There is also the addition of an illustrated marriage certificate dated to 1863, for Fanny Augusta Smith and William M. Roderick Robertson.

Chamber pot
CA ON00428 2013.04 · Item · ca. 1902 - ca. 1926

Item is one chamber pot, or portable toilet, with lid and handle. Produced by Dudson Wilcox & Till Ltd. It features embossing and the floral "clio" print from their range of transferware patterns. The pot itself has a green design, whereas the design on the lid is in dark blue and the floral pattern differs slightly. This may suggests the lid is not the original.

Chamber pots were often kept under a bed or in a nightstand. They remained a common household item until the mid twentieth century, but variations of the chamber pot are still in use today.

This collection of tableware includes plates, bowls, and platters in various sizes. All the items have a matching blue and white motif in a style referred to as Flow Blue ceramics. In terms of design, it is similar to traditional blue and white china, except the ceramics undergo a process during glazing that creates an intentional blur of the colours. Sometimes called "poor man's china", it became popular for its inexpensive price, durability and its ability to be mass produced. Known as "transferware", a variety of different patterns arose in an attempt to replicate the look of eastern ceramic wares. Patterns were largely derived from Chinese-export wares and existent (topographical, historical and botanical) images known as source prints. These kinds of ceramics became increasingly popular in the North American market. This set is demonstrative of the kind of tableware that may have been used at Lambton House when it was operational.

Part of Howard and Mary Louise Ashbourne Collection

Item is an apple peeler. It has a clamp on the bottom that would allow the user to secure the device to a table or counter. An apple would be placed on the spikes, through the core. Turning the crank with the wooden handle causes the subsequent gears to spin allowing the arm with the razor to peel the apple. There is a patent stamp on the peeler, however due to age and storage conditions the text is illegible. It definitely reads "PAT JAN" but the year is unclear.

CA ON00428 2021.07-2021.07.02 · Item · ca. 1900
Part of Howard and Mary Louise Ashbourne Collection

Item is a cherry pitter or cherry stoner. It has a clamp on the bottom that would allow the user the ability to secure the device to a table or counter. Whole cherries were then placed on the protruding plate that angled into the punch which removed the pit. The punch is operated by a crank and wooden handle. These kinds of kitchen gadgets became popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a way to create more efficiency in the home.
