Archival description
CA ON00156 DA TD/CTLC · Collection · 2007

This collection comprises documents received in response to an Access to Information request addressed to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) by the Corporation of the Town of Deseronto, Ontario, in 2008. The request asked for copies of documentation submitted as part of the Culbertson Tract land claim of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and upon which the decision to allow the claim had been based.

The documents in this collection are all photocopies of materials located in public archives in Canada. The materials range in date from 1779 to 1959 and record the interactions between the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and the British and Canadian governments, in relation to lands, from the time of their departure from the Mohawk Valley to the mid-twentieth century.

Collection · 1840-1885

Collection consists of approximately fifty pieces of antiquarian maps, engraved views, portraits and scenes relating to the Red River Settlement of Manitoba and the North West Rebellion of 1885. The engravings reflect the emerging province of Manitoba as seen through the eyes of nineteenth century travelers and historians. Two bird’s eye views are of particular note, the first being a spread of views, buildings and an insert map of Winnipeg dated 1882, and the second being a lithographic bird’s eye view of Winnipeg, 1884, depicting the city in its early development, surrounded by vignettes of local prominent public and private buildings. Also included is a “British America” J. & F. Tallis map with the principle vignette being “Hudson City”, ca. 1849.

Gerald Goltz Collection
CA ON00159 P188 · Collection · [ca. 1907-1975]

The Gerald Goltz Collection consists of postcards and photographs that depict northeastern Ontario throughout the years. The postcards are both in black and white and in colour, and were collected throughout the years by Gerald Goltz. Although most of the postcards were obtained locally, some were purchased from a post card dealer while others were purchased during travels. While some of the images are of Cobalt, Parry Sound, and Georgian Bay, the majority of the collection consists of images of Sudbury, Massey, Espanola, as well as other surrounding areas. Dating approximately from 1907 to 1975, the images depict scenic landscapes, local landmarks and buildings of these northeastern towns. Some of these postcards also consist of humoristic images. The 342 postcards were printed and distributed by over 35 different publishing companies, such as Valentine-Black Co. Ltd., Photogelatine Engraving Co., Sudbury News Service Ltd., and Heliotype Co. Ltd. Many of the postcards of Massey were made by Hugh Cummings, a local photographer.

Most of the records consist of letters written to Mark Young Stark and his wife, Agatha, in Dundas. Correspondents include friends and family in Scotland or friends and colleagues in Upper Canada. Of the Scottish letters, those from Stark’s stepmother (Mary Bannatyne) and aunt (Grace Young) are the most numerous. Some letters predate Stark’s immigration to Canada in 1833. Other letters were written to his wife and to their daughter, Mary Ann, after Stark’s death in 1866. Topics addressed in the letters revolve around personal and family news but occasionally touch on current events, including politics and ecclesiastical affairs.

One album contains 299 photographs which document the development of Kapuskasing, the construction of the hydro-electric dam, the experimental farm, and the fire that destroyed it. The photographs also illustrate daily life, as well as various outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and snowshoeing. The Moose Factory photos include the visit of Charles Lindberg and wife in August 1931. They also include photos of First Nations’ youth.

The second photo album of 262 photographs contains photographs of families and youth of Kapuskasing and other municipalities of the region, and documents their lives as well as summer and winter activities in the region. Only in a few are individuals identified and dated. In the album are also a large number of photos of the military including some of the Kapuskasing internment camp and various internees.
