This fonds reflects Dr. Peter S. Schmalz’s career as an educator, researcher and author from the late 1960s to early 2000s. He used these resources in the creation of a Master's Thesis, a Doctoral Thesis, numerous learned articles, several books, and reports for the Ministry of Natural Resources, First Nations communities, the provincial government and federal government. The focus of his research and writing concerned First Nations as well as Town of Walkerton history.

These documents consist of photocopied records, many of which were copied from microfilm held by the National Archives of Canada, including material from NAC's reference number RG 10 (parts of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development fonds). Records also include microform, brochures, audiotapes and videotapes, newspapers and clippings, magazines and research cards.

Material in the fonds also reflects the history and experience of First Nations across North America.

The material further reflects Dr. Schmalz’s leadership in education, particularly as it relates to both the education of First Nation students and the education of others about the history of First Nations. Records relate to a co-operative education project, field archaeology and native studies summer course, as well as curriculum created by Peter Schmalz and other education resources.

Dr. Schmalz’s work, activities and interests are also reflected through his correspondence, publications, theses, and essays.

Graeme Mount fonds
CA ON00159 P011 · Fundo · [ca. 1968-2014] (originally created 1838-2014)

The Graeme Mount fonds attests to Mount’s different activities and achievements as a professor in the Laurentian University history department, as a researcher, and as a member of the Laurentian Unviersity community. Many files concern his teaching activities: notes and texts for courses taught, field trips with students and colleagues, and travel logs are amongst the many teaching and research activities that are well documented. The fonds also contains many photographs taken on his travels. These include photos of a trip to South Korea in 1999 with Laurentian faculty members, as well as photos taken in Chile and published in one of his books. Finally the fonds contains many research notes including copies of Consulate correspondence (originally created 1910-1935) from the Department of State; files concerning the Ku Klux Klan; records from the closure of the Consular Agency in Sudbury as well as American Tourism via Sault Ste. Marie, World War I, economic matters and prohibition in the 1920's. Copies of archives from Monaco dating from 1838-1868 are also included.

CA ON00159 P021 · Fundo · 1920-1969, predominant 1929-1950

The Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) fonds consists mostly of handwritten and typed correspondence, and also contains minutes, resolutions, bankbooks, cheque stubs, ledgers, reports, school curriculum outlines, and news bulletins. Included as well are travel claims, salary schedules, membership lists and some copies of the federation magazine The Bulletin (1958-1968).

This fonds, documenting the labour movement within education, presents a comprehensive picture of OSSTF affairs and organizing procedures from 1920-1968. Specifically, although not without exception, the records highlight OSSTF activities in Districts 28 and 29, jurisdictions which encompass most of Northeastern Ontario. Many papers represent correspondence to and between the Provincial Executive, the District Secretaries and the membership at large. Meticulous accounts of membership totals and dues illustrate the constant drive for membership participation through the years, and the financial records illustrate the success of this drive. Some very lively correspondence written by the Provincial General Secretary and the Provincial Treasurer, both of whom served in these positions from 1924-1947, is testament to their enthusiasm and convictions. Researchers interested in the OSSTF response to the loss of 600 teachers to the armed service during WWII, to the matter of child poverty, to the School Law Amendment Act of 1938, and to cases of professional difficulty will find the records rich in documentation.
