The letter is in response to a letter of congratulations received by Vincent Massey from the congregation of St. Mark's Church. Signed by Vincent Massey. This letter is reproduced on page 89 of "Time Was." Details for the reproduction are written on the back of the letter. File consists of an essay written by H. R. S. Ryan on the 100th anniversary of the Baldwin Act. The essay was published in "Ontario History" in 1950 under the title "Echoes from the Minute books: Notes on the proceedings of the Board of police of Port Hope, 1834-1849" pages 184-204. The essay details early history of the town and its residents. Footnotes are given to document sources. It also includes the original transcript of the essay by H. R. S. Ryan.

File consists of a series of correspondence sent from County Devon to relatives in Port Hope. Letters written to William Rowden and Mary Grace Rowden, and provide insight into the conditions in rural England, compared to Port Hope. Envelopes are also included in this file. Letters written to William Rowden, addressed to him as "Dear Brother" and to Grace Haskill, addressed as "Dear Niece." The letters are written by Mary Lewis, wife of George Lewis of Bideford, Devon, England and Grace Branch of Bideford, Devon England. Also one written by "Lizzie" to Grace Haskill; addressed "Dear Cousin." Also sisters Grace and Maria are mentioned in the letters. Letters discuss family, health, weather and crops between 1896 and 1910.
